Stanford University Department of Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Opening
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the junior level (Assistant or untenured Associate Professor). Appointments will be made at a rank commensurate with experience and accomplishment.
We seek applicants with significant accomplishments and future potential across the broad field of materials science and engineering. We particularly encourage applications from candidates who have interests in the topics of computational materials science, biomaterials science, and/or mechanical properties, all broadly defined.
The successful candidate is expected to make major contributions to scholarship in materials science and to contribute significant leadership to related academic programs at Stanford. Stanford University has excellent shared resources for materials synthesis, fabrication, computation, and characterization to enable materials research discoveries, as represented by the nano@Stanford facilities, the Stanford Research Computing Facility (SRCF), and facilities at the interdisciplinary Sarafan Chemistry, Engineering and Medicine for Health Institute (ChEM-H). Furthermore, there are significant partnering opportunities with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
The successful candidate must have completed, or be completing, a Ph.D. in the advertised field or a closely related one. The successful candidate will be expected to teach at the graduate and undergraduate level, develop advanced graduate courses in their research specialty, and develop a world-class research program. We are looking for a motivated individual who is committed to excellence in teaching and the mentoring of students in a multidisciplinary environment, potentially spanning several departments and schools, including the Schools of Engineering, Medicine, the new Doerr School of Sustainability, and Humanities and Sciences.
Applications should include a resume, brief statements of research and teaching interests (3-5 pages total for both combined), and the names and e-mail addresses of 3-5 references. We will request letters of recommendation after candidates are short-listed. Within the research statement (not to exceed 4 pages), applicants are encouraged to write a detailed description of their plans for future research and how those plans might be realized in a Stanford setting. Within the teaching statement (not to exceed 1 page), applicants are encouraged to describe their vision of teaching to students in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and related fields. Candidates should apply online at the link: online application portal.
The Materials Science and Engineering Department, School of Engineering, and Stanford University value faculty who will help foster an open and respectful academic environment for colleagues, students, and staff with a wide range of backgrounds and perspectives. Candidates may choose to include as part of their research and teaching statements a brief discussion about how their work and experience will further these values.
Applications will be accepted and considered on a continuous basis until December 15, 2025. Questions should be directed to the Search Committee Chair, c/o Chris Hall, via electronic mail to msesearch@stanford.edu.
The expected base pay range for this position is:
Assistant Professor: $141,247- $159,910 Associate Professor (untenured): $152,547 - $191,506
This base pay range is for a nine-month academic appointment and does not include summer salary. For more information about compensation and our wide range of benefits, including housing assistance, please contact the hiring department.

Located between San Francisco and San Jose in the heart of Silicon Valley, Stanford University is recognized as one of the world's leading research and teaching institutions. Leland and Jane Stanford founded the University to "promote the public welfare by exercising an influence on behalf of humanity and civilization." Stanford opened its doors in 1891, and more than a century later, it remains dedicated to finding solutions to the great challenges of the day and to preparing students for leadership in a complex world. The University's thriving diverse community is comprised of nearly 7000 undergraduate students, 9000 graduate students, 2000 faculty members, 1900 postdoctoral scholars, and over 11,000 academic and administrative staff in seven schools including several interdisciplinary research centers and institutes. The campus spreads over 8000 contiguous acres and nearly all undergraduates live on campus. Stanford offers bachelor's and master's degrees in addition to doctoral degrees (PhD, MD, DMA and JD) plus a number of professional and continuing education programs and certifications.
